It could turn out to be the easiest drug case Webster County Prosecutor Dwayne Vandevender ever prosecutes because he's directly involved.
Vandevender was working in his Webster Springs office Wednesday when he received a text message, something unusual because he normally doesn't text and doesn't have it on his call plan. The message said "Are You Looking?" and Prosecutor Vandevender recognized that phrase as one that's used when someone is trying to sell illegal drugs.
The prosecutor had someone make a follow-up call and he began a texting conversation with the woman and told her he would buy 6 hydrocodone pills for $8 apiece. "We arranged to meet at the Kroger parking lot behind Long John Silver's in Braxton County and I gave her the description of the trooper's (unmarked) vehicle and when she and her boyfriend pulled up to deliver the drugs two troopers jumped out and arrested them," the prosecutor said it was all over in about 90 minutes.
Anna Green, 23 and Michael Cowger, 24, both of Braxton County are in custody.
The prosecutor's cell phone number is apparently one digit off from the person Green was trying to contact. "She entered in a wrong digit and had a bad day," the prosecutor said. "Ya know sometimes it's just a fortunate event like that that we are able to take advantage of."
Vandevender was getting plenty of text messages on Thursday from police officers pulling his leg. "I bet I got 15 or 20 from the officers asking me if I'm still looking or if I got anything, so they are having some fun with it," he said.
