A relationship between a Berkeley County middle school teacher and a 14-year-old boy allegedly began through text messaging.
Musselman Middle School teacher Stephanie Jo Walters, 27, is now charged with sexual abuse after investigators say she led the boy into a janitor's closet at the school, kissed him and allowed the boy to touch her breasts.
Walters has been on administrative leave since April 22. She turned herself in to police Friday and posted $20,000 bond.
Investigators say another student learned of the relationship and reported it. It allegedly began last December at a basketball game, followed by text messages of a sexual nature in February.
Berkeley County School Superintendent Manny Arvon issued a prepared statement Friday calling what happened an "unfortunate occurrence." Arvon says Walters, who has been a teacher for five years, passed a criminal fingerprint requirement and other tests before she was hired.
Walters faces a hearing soon before the Berkeley County Board of Education. She also faces a criminal preliminary hearing on the charge of sexual abuse by a person in trust.
