May Brings Heavy Showers
MetroNews
Statewide

Meteorologists with the National Weather Service say localized downpours are possible out of many of the thunderstorms that will move through West Virginia into Wednesday.

Residents in part of Lincoln County saw such a downpour on Monday.

"It was an extremely heavy rain.  I was out in it and I can't tell you the last time I've seen rain quite that heavy," Lincoln County Office of Emergency Services Director Allen Holder said.  "Luckily, it didn't last too long."

Holder says the water did not do a whole lot of damage, but Bulger Road in the Alkol and Spurlockville area was still closed early on Tuesday afternoon because of road damage.

In parts of Kanawha County, as much as two inches of rain fell Monday in a half hour time period, sending water into homes and streets in Nitro and St. Albans.  Emergency officials say that much water puts a strain on drainage systems.

It's the kind of high water Holder says they saw, as well, earlier this month in Lincoln County.

"We had some flooding but very little damage," he says.  "Lincoln County is like most of the Southern West Virginia counties.  The mountains are tall and steep and, if the rains come very hard, then you do have small stream flooding."
