More than 130 wind turbines now stand at NedPower's Grant County facility. The site, near the Tucker County line, covers 12 miles of ridgeline.
Governor Joe Manchin was among the more than 100 people in Mount Storm on Thursday to dedicate it.
The Governor says wind is one of the many different sources of energy that are not fully being utilized right now.
"We're leaving so much fuel in the woods and all of our waste products and that would complement the coal that we use and we can use the coal in a much better, cleaner way and more efficiently than what we are now," Governor Manchin told MetroNews Affiliate WDYK Radio in Cumberland, Maryland.
The NedPower site is already called the largest wind facility in operation in the Eastern United States and there are plans in the works to expand it.
More than 260 additional megawatts for NedPower are part of the 500 total megawatts the state Public Service Commission has already approved for wind power throughout West Virginia.
"Each of these turbines you're looking at today are two megawatts, so 500 megawatts means another 250 turbines in the state of West Virginia are on their way," says state Division of Energy Director Jeff Herholdt.
NedPower officials say the existing turbines in Grant County generate up to 264 megawatts of electricity, enough to power 66,000 homes and businesses.
