A Ripley High School student who loves watching West Virginia sunsets has been chosen as the recipient of the 2009 West Virginia Scholar Award.
Rachel White, 16, of Kenna, was named during a luncheon Tuesday at West Virginia Wesleyan in Buckhannon.
White was among 12 finalists for the award, which is a four-year scholarship to Wesleyan valued at more than $90,000.
White and her twin-sister just completed their junior years at Ripley High School. Rachel is a 4.0 student and one day wants to be a doctor.
In her personal statement Rachel said, "I normally come home with a sufficient amount of homework, but after that is completed I always go outside. Whether it is petting my dog, swimming, cutting the grass, or planting a garden, it is a great feeling to take in the fresh air and watch the beautiful, unique sunsets."
She is active in church where she teaches, sings and visits a local nursing home. "I like how much church has influenced me and helped me encourage others," White said.
White's school activities include the Honor Society, The Viking Marching Band and the girls soccer team.
But White says it's being outside that she loves the best. "However, if the weather or season does not permit being outdoors, I continue learning new songs on the piano or make a special gift for someone. I love handing someone a personalized card or gift because that may be what improves their day," she said.
In addition to MetroNews and West Virginia Wesleyan, the sponsors for the program are Energize West Virginia With Natural Gas, the West Virginia Health Care Association, Friends of Coal and the West Virginia Directors of Senior and Community Services.
