After seven years, Marshall University's Athletic Director is hanging it up and deciding what he's going to do next.
"I'm going to take the month of July off and there's just a few things I want to do and then a few things that I really need to assess. There's a couple of opportunities out there," Bob Marcum said on Tuesday's MetroNews Talkline.
Tuesday was his last day on the job.
The Huntington native returned home in July 2002 to take over Marshall's Athletic Department and ended up staying longer than he expected.
"I stayed a lot longer and, probably, stayed longer than some people wanted me to," the 72-year old Marcum says. Prior to being hired at Marshall, Marcum worked for nine years as the Athletic Director at the University of Massachusetts.
On Marcum's watch, Marshall joined the newly formed Conference USA back in 2005. He's overseen upgrades at Joan C. Edwards Stadium and the Cam Henderson Center, hired Herd Head Football Coach Mark Snyder and helped set up the football series between his Alma Mater and West Virginia University.
Marcum, who is a Huntington High graduate, says that series needs to continue in a specific way. "There's only one form that's out there and that's home and home."
Marcum's contract with Marshall University ended with the close of June. An outside consulting firm is helping with the search for a new Athletic Director for Marshall.
