Authorities are trying to determine what caused a boat hauling four anglers in the Kanawha River to tip over early Sunday morning, putting all four into the water and leading to the drowning of one Braxton County teenager.
"It had been storming on and off and I think it was storming at the time this happened," said Conservation Officer C-J Whittington of the West Virginia DNR.
Apparently the four were on an island and were attempting to make it to shore in a small boat. Whittington says the boat didn't capsize, but rather tipped forward, spilling its occupants into the swirling waters.
"It's right below the falls there and there's a lot of undertows and strange currents," Whittington said.
Two of the fishermen swam back to the island while the other two attempted to get to shore. However, 17-year old CJ Rose from Strange Creek in Braxton County didn't make it.
"Believe he was trying to make it to shore was the last account anybody had of him," said Whittington. "They lost sight and sound of him, where he was at."
The incident not only happened in the midst of a violent storm, but also at 3:00 in the morning when visibility was almost zero. Search and rescue crews pulled his body from the water late in the day on Sunday in almost the exact spot he was last seen.
The DNR and Fayette County Sheriff's Department are investigating the incident. Whittington says so far there's no evidence of alcohol or any other foul play.
