Glen Jean, Fayette County

Third District Congressman Nick Rahall maintains his support for a public option despite opposition from a number of his constituents.

"You've heard me express my support for a public option, and I will vote for such a public option," Rahall said to the applause of a number of supporters during his latest town hall in Fayette County.

Despite the clapping for the current incarnation of health reform in Washington, D.C., the majority of the comments echoed what has been heard at previous town halls around the country.

"I also agree we need reform in health care, but I think you're going about it the wrong way," one woman said to her own set of applause from the crowd.

That afternoon in Glen Jean, another woman stepped up to the mic with her concerns. Under the current legislation, her business does not qualify for an exemption from fines requiring her to have health coverage for all her employees. It's a problem that could put her out of business.

"I want to see all of my employees insured, but I can't afford to do that. I just don't feel this government option is going to assist me because I'm not a 'small business owner,' but I am," she said.

Rahall said he understood the concerns, but the current legislation was about leveling the playing field so all people can have access to health care.

"Small businesses are currently disadvantaged relative to their relationship to bigger businesses who can provide a better health care package to their employees," the Congressman said.

Over two hundred people attended the town hall at the National Guard Armory in Glen Jean Tuesday afternoon. Rahall has another one planned for Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine in Lewisburg.
