Police in Kanawha County have released the name of the man shot and killed by Charleston police officers early Sunday morning.
The county sheriff's dept. says Brian Scott Good, 31, of the Big Chimney area allegedly refused to stop for police during a pursuit that began on the east end of Charleston and ended outside the city limits.
Good allegedly used his truck to ram two police cruisers. That's when Charleston Police Patrolman Jerry Jones and other officers opened fire. Good was killed, but so was Jones. The officer was hit by crossfire from a fellow officer.
Kanawha County Prosecutor Mark Plants says the tragic incident shows there is no such thing as a routine night for police officers. "They put their lives on the line everyday they walk out to work and a young man didn't come home from work Saturday night," the prosecutor said.
The sheriff's dept. is continuing its investigation and Prosecutor Plants says sometime in the near future he'll receive a report and decide if the conduct in the two shooting deaths rises to the level of criminal conduct. "If so, we will proceed with prosecution," Plants said.
At the time of his death Good was free on bond following a domestic battery case. He also had been convicted of nighttime burglary. He had prior charges of malicious wounding, destruction of property and disorderly conduct.
Prosecutor Plants says Good was arrested in 2007 on a meth lab drug charge. He says the case was forwarded to a grand jury, but never taken up. Plants says that's an example why he wants speedy prosecution.
"All felony cases where we have evidence will be presented to the grand jury within 30 to 45 days and the reason for that is the crime rate, I believe, will decrease, if we hold criminals immediately responsible for their actions," Plants said.
