A Putnam County company is making sure families in three states will not go hungry this winter.
U.S. Food Service in Hurricane donated over 70 tons of food on Monday to Mountaineer Food Bank in Gassaway and the Huntington Area Food Bank in Huntington. Through those food banks, that food will go to families in need throughout the entire state of West Virginia and portions of Kentucky and Ohio.
"The next couple of months they will be receiving that food at their warehouses and it will be going out to the public as soon as it possibly can," says Russ Bailey, President of U.S. Food Services.
The donation by U.S. Food Service is part of a program called Feeding America where the company teams up with vendors like Tyson Food Service, Pilgrim's Pride, and Campbell's Soup in order to gather the massive amount of food. The tons of food will equal out to about 150,000 meals for families in the Tri-State area.
"We're just trying to do our part to ease the pain for some of our fellow citizens out there," says Bailey.
The donations were given to the food banks Monday evening during a ceremony at Berry Hills Country Club in Charleston.
This isn't the first time U.S. Food Service has helped people out in West Virginia. After the food distributor’s annual food show in Charleston back in May, the company helped truck over 20 tons of non-perishable dry goods and cleaning supplies to southern West Virginia.
