A man accused of robbing the Poca Valley Bank in Clendenin has been taken to the South Central Regional Jail.
Jacob McCoy Samples, 23, of Cross Lanes was arrested and arraigned in Kanawha County Magistrate Court on Monday night. Detective S.D Snuffer was the arresting officer in the case.
Police had been searching for the suspect since about 9:45 a.m. According to the police report, the man walked into the bank carrying what appeared to be a firearm and cursed at the teller demanding money. He then got away on foot with several thousands of dollars.
Snuffer said later in his report that he had received a tip in the evening that a man named Jacob Samples had robbed the bank. Snuffer then reviewed the surveillance footage from Monday morning. He said he had met Samples in a previous investigation and the man in the video looked just like him.
Snuffer and other officers then went to Samples' home in Cross Lanes. His report says that Samples confessed to robbing the bank when police confronted him.
Police say Samples had no idea how much money he was carrying from the robbery. He told deputies that he had been running all day and did not have time to count it. Investigators say some cash was found on Samples.
Samples was arraigned in Magistrate Court later that evening at around 11:30 p.m. He was charged with a felony count of bank robbery.
While he was being arraigned, Samples also asked the detectives if he could adjust his pants leg. He then reached inside his sock to throw away what looked like a wad of paper in a nearby trash bin.
The detective observing Samples saw him throw the item away. He picked it up out of the trash and unwadded the piece of paper to reveal what looked like money. He and another officer then escorted Samples away.
A preliminary hearing will be scheduled in the coming days to determine whether the charges will be bound over to a grand jury. Samples is being held on $100,000 bond.
