A late frost this Spring has lead to fewer walnuts this year, but that will not stop the Annual Black Walnut Festival, which is now in its 55th year.
It opens Friday in Spencer in Roane County.
"We have folks bringing walnuts in all this week," longtime Spencer Mayor Terry Williams says. There are all kinds of ways to use those walnuts. "There is just something for everyone."
The festival has grown to a five-day celebration since it was created in 1954, bringing thousands of people into Roane County.
"We have black walnuts in everything. We have black walnut cake and cookies and candy and pies and ice cream, even black walnut pancakes."
The Black Festival Grand Parade steps off a noon Saturday in Downtown Spencer. "It's just a super festival. It's just a great place to be in West Virginia this weekend."
