More than 600 kids in West Virginia will be not be collecting candy this Halloween. Instead, they'll be picking up nonperishable food donations as part of a statewide food drive called "Trick or Eat," a program with the 58Food Drive.
The goal of the 58Food Drive is to combat hunger in West Virginia.
This is the first year for the statewide effort that will involve kids from 18 different churches in Morgantown, Wheeling, Fairmont, Clarksburg, Bridgeport, Charleston and Huntington.
It all started in Wheeling. "We kind of took that idea and just encouraged other youth groups and church groups and groups across the state to participate," says Trey Dunham with Chestnut Ridge Church in Morgantown.
Informational door hangers or cards have been left at nearly 4,000 homes. Instead of showing up looking for candy, the kids will pick up the food items households have provided.
"From what I can tell, they've all been pretty excited. I think they sense the bigger purpose there," Dunham says.
All of the items collected on October 31st will go to food banks and pantries in West Virginia, including the Mountaineer Food Bank in Braxton County.
