Victory Celebration Marred By Pepper Spray Incident
Staff
Keyser

Audio Included Mineral Superintendent On Pepper Spray
Fans of Frankfort High School in Mineral County were peppered sprayed by a security guard following last Friday night's emotional win over Keyser, and now the county school superintendent is reviewing the incident.

Mineral County Superintendent Skip Hackworth says he's gathering information from the schools and the security firm, but apparently a security guard with H Team Security of Petersburg sprayed a Frankfort High student who was running onto the field at Keyser after Frankfort's 22-13 win. The spray also impacted other fans.

"I know both principals hate it and I know both communities hate it," Hackworth told MetroNews Tuesday. "Now we have to deal with the aftermath and how do we prevent this in the future or was this an appropriate action?"

Hackworth says Keyser High has employed the licensed, bonded security firm for several years. He says the workers are not armed. The superintendent says fans are warned by the PA announcer not to come onto the field.

Superintendent Hackworth was expecting a report from the security guard involved sometime Tuesday. "I do understand that he made several attempts to warn the student and I've been told he showed the can and said, 'If you don't stop, I will spray,'" Hackworth said.

Some other Frankfort fans got a whiff of the pepper spray and reported burning eyes and throats. Superintendent Hackworth says it was a very unfortunate incident. "It's a real downer on a fantastic Friday night of football," he said. "We are doing a post-incident debriefing. You review all of the facts and if any other action needs to be taken you do it then."

Friday's Mineral Bowl victory was the first in six years for Frankfort
