West Liberty University will host California University of Pennsylvania on Saturday for the Super Region 1 Championship Game in football.
The Hilltoppers advanced after an 84-63 win over Edinboro Saturday at Russek Field, the first time West Liberty has played in an NCAA Division II football game.
"I don't think any of my coaches thought we would score 84 (points) in a playoff game," Head Coach Roger Waialae said on Monday's MetroNews Talkline. "I'm proud of our team. We just did the things that we needed to do to win the game."
West Liberty scored 56 points in the first half of the semifinal game with just eleven minutes of ball possession.
Most of the forward movement for both teams came in the air. Edinboro recorded 630 net passing yards, enough for an NCAA Division II single game passing record. West Liberty had 540 passing yards during Saturday's game, a school record.
Together, the teams set an all-time NCAA Division 11 record with 1,394 total yards of offense.
"They have a quarterback, one of the best quarterbacks in Division II, so I knew it was going to be high scoring. I never thought it would get up to the points it did," Coach Waialae says.
Even though the Hilltoppers were up 28-7 in the first 15 minutes of the game, Waialae says they stayed focused. "I thought we were doing a good job offensively and defensively."
Revenge may have been part of the motivation for West Liberty which has not lost a game since the season opener in August. Edinboro won that game 42-30.
Kickoff for West Liberty and California University of Pennsylvania comes at noon on Saturday at Russek Field.
