'A Heck Of An Explosion'

Rainelle, Greenbrier County

Audio Included Greenbrier County Sheriff Jim Childers: Explosion

Five of the six people injured in a Monday explosion at a home in Greenbrier County are still hospitalized.

Terry Patterson Sr., the owner of the house, was treated at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center in Fairlea and released.

His son Terry Patterson Jr. and daughter, Tara Patterson as well as two visitor to the house Tiffeny Williams and Kelly Wickline are in critical condition and on life support at University of Virginia Health System in Charlottesville. Tacy Patterson, Terry Patterson, Sr's wife, is in critical condition and on life support at CAMC. Their injuries range from burns to severe head trauma. The victims range in age from 18 to 54.

"This has got us scratching our heads, to be honest with you," Greenbrier County Sheriff Jim Childers said on Tuesday's MetroNews Talkline of the explosion that leveled the house on Crosier Road.

Only Terry Patterson, Senior, has been able to talk with investigators with the state Fire Marshal's Office and the Greenbrier County Sheriff's Department at this point.  Patterson says he has no idea what happened.  He told investigators he was in bed when he and his wife were completely blown out of the house in the explosion.

Sheriff Childers says, "There's not many things that cause a blast like that and that's what we're trying to weed out right now."

There was a propane tank on the property, but the Sheriff says that tank is intact.  He says he doesn't believe natural gas caused the explosion. "I don't think so," he said of the possibility.

What investigators need, he says, is a break in the case.

"It took a heck of an explosion to level a house like this and injure this many people and blow them out of the house."

The explosion occurred at around 7 a.m. on Monday.  Five fire departments responded to the house.
