Fans in the southern part of the state always look forward to when the WVU Mountaineers Men's Basketball team comes to Charleston. This year they're getting an early Thanksgiving treat as the Mountaineers take on the Citadel Tuesday night.
"It's pretty exciting for the southern part of the state because it's a three, three and a half hour drive to go to Morgantown. It's pretty nice to get the experience in Charleston," said Cody Pierce, who drove up from Chapmanville.
Coach Bob Huggins and MetroNews Statewide Sportsline Host Tony Caridi gave Charleston to full Morgantown experience when they hosted a Monday night Bob Huggins edition of Sportsline live from the Charleston Marriot. Fans got to mingle and talk with the coach players that night.
The only cost of admission was a can of food for the Mountain Mission food bank. About 400 -500 cans and $500 in donations were collected that night.
"Every can counts. Every dollar counts. When you're reaching out trying to help those in need, they appreciate it. We can't do it if not for the community and organizations like WVU and staff here to help us help others," said Mountain Mission Executive Director John Roberts.
Fans are looking forward to seeing what the team can do this year, and the Citadel game offers them a sort of preview of things to come. They're especially excited to see a bigger Mountaineers team, and the potential that has to compliment Coach Bob Huggins' coaching style.
"Oh, that's his style. He likes that big man underneath, that big wide body. That's what he's going to have, I think," said Steve Rhodes of Bancroft.
West Virginia University takes on the Citadel. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. Tuesday night at the Charleston Civic Center.
