Shoppers Stay Motivated

There are deals to be had.

And many West Virginians are expected to be out early on this day after Thanksgiving to take advantage of those bargains on a number of items.

Among the top items,  "Toys, electronics and apparel," says West Virginia Retailers Association President Bridget Lambert.

Because of those target items with low, low prices, "We're actually expecting to see more people shop this year than did last year on Black Friday," Lambert tells MetroNews.

Last year, overall holiday spending was down 3.4% across the country.  The National Retail Federation is predicting a 1% decline this year.

"The retailers are starting to see some signs of recovery," Lambert tells MetroNews.

"Our sales in August came in ahead of projections.  There's some momentum growing in the stock market.  However, we're kind of still a little bit uneasy about the job uncertainty that's going on and housing values and how that can take a toll on our industry at this time of year."

Lambert says they'll know more about how much people will likely be spending in the coming weeks over the next few days.

"I think it is the beginning marker for us to judge the impact of the season.  Certainly, Black Friday is very important in that it lets us know what type of growth we can expect over the next few weeks, up until Christmas Eve."

A survey from the National Retail Federation indicates more than 28% of those who will shop on Black Friday will be up and out the door for the early bird specials between 4 a.m. and 6 a.m.
