More Problems For Hampshire County Attorney
Staff
Charleston

A Hampshire County attorney, who already lost his law license for a year, is in trouble again.

The state Office of Disciplinary Counsel filed a new set of charges against Romney attorney Don Cookman Monday.

Cookman, who also serves as a county commissioner in Hampshire County and is up for reelection, had his law license suspended by the state Supreme Court in September. Eleven separate complaints were made against him on issues dealing with diligence as an attorney.

The new statement of charges contains five complaints including failing to communicate with clients; failing to diligently pursue cases on behalf of clients; making material misrepresentations to his clients; falsifying documents; and failure to respond to requests for information from the Office of Disciplinary Counsel.

Cookman has 30 days to answer the charges. A hearing will then take place before the hearing panel of the state Lawyer Disciplinary Board. The state Supreme Court will make a final decision on the panel's recommendation.
