West Virginia University men’s basketball guard Joe Mazzulla has been suspended indefinitely after an arrest for domestic violence at a Morgantown nightclub April 18th. Mazzulla was arraigned on a domestic battery charge Friday afternoon in Monongalia County Magistrate Court.
According to the Monongalia County prosecutor's office the 20-year-old Mazzulla was involved in an altercation with a woman at de Lazy Lizard on High Street. According to the criminal complaint Mazzulla and the woman were arguing when he allegedly "grabbed her around the neck in a forceful manner."
Coach Bob Huggins announced Friday that Mazzulla was suspended indefinitely for a violation of team rules, “Joe is suspended indefinitely from all basketball related activities,” says Huggins. “We take violations of our team rules very seriously.”
Coach Huggins will have no further comment on the situation at this time.
This is not the first arrest for Mazzulla. He and teammate Cam Thoroughman were arrested last September in Pittsburgh for an altercation with Pittsburgh police officers at PNC Park during a Pittsburgh Pirates baseball game. They both pleaded guilty to misdemenors and paid $222 fines each.
Mazzulla missed all but seven games last season with a shoulder injury. He received a medical redshirt after undergoing surgery to fix a growth plate in his shoulder and has two years of eligibility remaining.
