Jefferson (2-6) at Martinsburg (6-2) – The Martinsburg Bulldogs lost their second game of the season to a out-of-state opponent last week, a 21-20 loss to Park View out of Sterling, Va. Martinsburg started the game strong by returning the opening kickoff for a touchdown, but Park View took control after that point and led 21-7 at the half. Martinsburg did make a great comeback in the second half. The Bulldogs made the switch from the spread formation to the wing T and gained 165 yards in the second half, compared to just 46 yards in the first half. But after pulling to within one on a Brandon Bishop 38-yard touchdown run, the extra point was blocked and Martinsburg lost 21-20. Bulldog junior quarterback Kam Puller finished with a season-low 15 yards rushing on 10 carries. David Gladden led the way for Martinsburg’s rushing attack with 95 yards, while Bishop rushed for 78 yards. The Jefferson Cougars won their second game of the season last Friday, a 28-14 victory over Hedgesville. Jefferson fell behind 6-0 after Hedgesville returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown, but Jefferson's Aktar Khan answered with an 80-yard kickoff return of his own, and Jefferson took a 7-6 lead. Sophomore running back Garrett Grantham led the way on the ground for Jefferson, rushing for 82 yards on 29 carries and three touchdowns. Jefferson's defense held Hedgesville to just 10 yards of total offense in the first half and 79 yards in the entire game. This week's game at Coburn Field will feature the first induction into the Martinsburg Sports Hall of Fame. Several of the inductees are former Martinsburg High greats, including two-time Olympian and current Washington Mystics assistant coach Vicki Bullett, former Major League Baseball players Scott Bullett, Doug Creek, and Ray "Buddy" Baker, Chris Fox, Ron Smallwood, Eliane Butler Bobo, and Martinsburg High School head basketball coach Dave Rogers. Keyser might be playing as well as any team in Class AA, as the Golden Tornado has outscored their opponents by a score of 210-49 during their recent five-game winning streak. Musselman will play their final three games at home, probably having to win at least two to get into the playoffs. Hampshire (3-4) at Hedgesville (1-7) – The Hedgesville Eagles went into the game against Jefferson last week struggling to put points on the board. Hedgesville's offense still struggled in the game, but the Eagles did get two special teams touchdowns by Michael Walters, who returned kickoffs of 90 and 93 yards for scores. But that was not enough for the HHS win, as Hedgesville lost its seventh game in a row, falling to the Cougars, 28-14. This week Hedgesville welcomes Hampshire to town. Hampshire started the season 3-0 but since that good start, it has now lost four games in a row, including last week’s 40-19 loss to Musselman. In that game, Hampshire was led by quarterback Phillip Malick who was 8-of-14 for 113 yards. Hampshire was held to 229 yards of total offense and just 92 yards rushing.
