Strong 2nd Half Powers Madonna

GameNotes:
No. 3 Madonna (22-3) pulled away in the third quarter from No. 6 Midland Trail (18-4) on Wednesday, advancing into the semifinals of the Class A state high school basketball tournament with a 62-43 win.

The two teams played a tight first quarter with Madonna eventually taking a marginal lead into the second stanza. A Ross Comis three with under a minute to go gave the Blue Dons a five-point advantage, 16-11. They eventually led after one quarter by three, 16-13.

A three-point play by Midland Trails Kelly Minter closed the gap to just one, 23-22, with about three minutes left until the break. A couple of Casey Kessler free throws shortly later gave Midland Trail the 24-23 lead. The two teams swapped the lead a couple more times again as Madonna took a 31-28 advantage into the break, scoring the final six points of the half.

Madonna, meanwhile, opened up the second half by forcing three early turnovers in the third quarter, scoring four straight points to take a 35-28 lead just a couple of minutes in. With just a couple minutes to go in the third, the Blue Dons had stretched their lead out to 44-32. A Nick Battista three-point shot then expanded the Madonna lead out to 15, 47-32 heading into the final stanza.

That deficit was too much for Midland Trail to overcome in the fourth quarter as Madonna moved on into the semifinals.

Battista led all scorers with 21 points in the win for the Blue Dons.

Morgantown Eliminates Defending Champs

GameNotes:
Hot shooting led Morgantown over Logan in the first round of the high school boys basketball state tournament Wednesday, 64-48.
Eight different Mohigans scored in the contest, led by forward Taylor Price, who made 6-of-8 shots. He wasnt the only Mohigan shooting well, as a team Morgantown shot a blistering 51.1 percent from the floor. 23 16

This team passes the ball, they like each other and they look for each other, said Morgantown Coach Tom Yester. The defense was the constant. Were built on defense, rebounding and trying to pound it inside a little bit. We got some timely shooting from a few guys.

Price also led the Mohigans with ten rebounds as Morgantown out-rebounding Logan 38 to 28. The Mohigans made it look easy, leading for most of the game, and by as many as 16 early in the fourth quarter.

We told [the players], Take shots that are good for us, not good for you, said Yester. You dont need to force anything, you dont need to show anybody your new 3-point range if you dont already have it. So, do what you do and thatll have to be good enough, and most time I think we did.

While Morgantown spread out its scoring among several players Logan leaned heavily on guards Paul Herbert Williamson (25) and Deyonte Coleman (12), who combined to score 37 of the Wildcats 48 points.

I thought we did a good job [on Williamson and Coleman], said Yester. Two terrific basketball players; They got their points, but we were able to hold the rest of them down and thats what we were hoping for.

Morgantown will play the winner of the South Charleston-George Washington game at 9 pm on Friday.

Catholic Fends Off Williamson

GameNotes:
Charleston Catholic was able to hold off Williamson, 45-32, to advance to the semifinals of the state tournament. The Irish will play Weirton-Madonna in the semis Friday morning.
This trip to Charleston was the last appearance at the state tournament for Williamson, which will be consolidated into the new Mingo Central next year. It was poor second half shooting that did in the Wolfpack, who shot just 22 percent for the game. Williamson actually led at the half 22-18.
They played hard, and we knew that was coming, I mean they were playing with a sense of pride for that program and community, and they werent going to roll over said Charleston Catholic coach Bill McClanahan. They came out and, truthfully, knocked us around in the first half and they knocked us on our heels. They looked like theyre the ones that have been here before and they were playing like the ones that were the higher seed.
Charleston Catholic has been the runners-up the last three seasons after winning three straight titles.
John Paul Tupta led the Irish with 15 points and ten rebounds. Freshman Nick George also recorded a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds.
We came out in the second half a little more focused, says McClanahan. In the fourth quarter we were able to spread them out a little bit and take advantage of some of our assets on the perimeter, some of our quickness, and we were able to finish.
Charleston Catholic and Madonna will meet at 9:30 Friday morning in the semifinals.

#8 Meadow Bridge at #1 Trinity Chrisitian A boys

Top-Seeded Trinity Advances

GameNotes:
Trinity proved why it was chosen as the No. 1 seed in Class A as the Warriors defeated the 8th seeded Meadow Bridge Warriors 76-31.

The size and speed of Trinity proved to be too much for the Wildcats early as the Warriors went up 21-5 after the first quarter of action. Trinitys Chris Martinez paced the offense and was a force inside for the Warriors scoring 10 points and grabbing seven rebounds.

By halftime, the Class A powerhouse from Morgantown led by 32 points.

The same domination took place in the second half for the Warriors, and Trinity was able to pull away for the victory. Warriors senior A.J. Mayle scored a game high 18 points in the game. There was some controversy of whether or not Mayle would be allowed to play in the post season, but he received a permanent restraining order that allowed him to play.

The top-seeded Warriors advance to face the winner of the Tucker County/Wheeling Central match up in the semi-finals on Friday at 1 p.m.

Tucker County Overcomes 14-Point Second-Half Defic

GameNotes:
A dominant second half propelled fourth-seeded Tucker County passed fifth-seeded Wheeling Central in overtime in the first round of the Class A state tournament Wednesday.

Up 14 in the third quarter, the lead looked safe for Wheeling Central, but a 23-7 run by Tucker County gave the Mountain Lions a two-point lead with 6:13 to play.

From there, it was a back and forth game. Central tied the game at 38 with two minutes to play. After Tucker missed a shot with one minute left, Central rebounded and held the ball for the final shot.

With 8.4 seconds left, Tucker fouled a Central player, allowing the Maroon Knights to set up an inbound play from beneath their own basket. Central got off two good looks, but neither fell, and the game went to overtime.

With 2:54 left in overtime, Tuckers Logan Snyder converted a three-point play to put Tucker ahead 41-38.

Centrals Shane Livingston responded by coming down the floor and nailing a three to make it 41-41 with 2:15 left.

Tucker then went to the line on its next three possessions, hitting four of six from the charity stripe. At that point, Tucker led 45-41 with 15.4 seconds to play.

On Centrals ensuing possession, Brandon Ingram was fouled while shooting a three. He hit two of three free throws to make it a 45-43 game with 10 seconds left.

Tucker County took the ball out and dribbled up court, but Logan Snyder turned the ball over at midcourt. Central called a timeout with 2.4 seconds left down 45-43.

On the games final possession, Wheeling Centrals Brandon Ingram shot a three from straight on about 27 feet away. The ball drew iron, but didnt fall.

Logan Snyder led the Mountain Lions with 19 points and 12 rebounds.

Tucker County will face Trinity at 1:00 Friday.

The Dots started off the second stanza with five straight points to expand their lead out to 23-13. Later, a Clinton Parsons steal turned into a Cuffee dunk off of a fast break, giving Poca a 12-point cushion, 29-17. Poca held a 33-21 advantage heading into the break. #5 Hedgesville at #4 Woodrow Wilson AAA boys

Hedgesville Slows Down Beckley To Advance

GameNotes:
Hedgesville overcame an injury to starter Juwan Powell and a furious second half from Beckley Woodrow Wilson to beat the Flying Eagles 40-35 in the quarterfinals of the high school boys basketball state tournament Thursday.

Powell, one of Hedgesvilles starters, went down with an injury in the first half when the Eagles were up by eight points. Hedgesville led by nine at the half 22-13, but Woodrow Wilson fought back to tie the game near the end of the third quarter, outscoring Hedgesville 13-4 in the third period.

One of the guys on the staff told us to call something different, said Hedgesville Coach Kelly Church. We ran one of our different things we run and we were able to get a couple of layups.

That got Hedgesville back on track and they closed out with a solid fourth quarter led by Q.J. Peterson, who led Hedgesville with 22 points, 16 of them in the first half on 8-of-16 shooting. Phillip Longnecker added ten points, five rebounds and four assists. Two other players chipped in four points apiece.

Theres no words to describe what [Longnecker] does for our basketball team, said Church. We tell people he gets the toughest assignment. He tweaked his ankle and he comes off the court with tears in his eyes and he can barely walk. I look at him and I said do you need one? He said, are you serious? Hes not coming out, theres no way.

Woodrow Wilson had more balanced scoring with six different players making their mark in the box score, but the Flying Eagles could never get into the up-tempo back-and-forth type of game they prefer. They were only able to score two fast break points the entire game.

We talked about [stopping the fast break] over and over before this thing started, and we are who we are and we do what we do and we have the utmost respect for Coach Kidd and for the Beckley basketball program, said Church.

Neither team shot the ball exceptionally well. Hedgesville converted 31.7 percent of its shots while Beckley only made 26 percent of its shots. They both ended with 33 points.

Hedgesville will move onto the semifinals where they will face Class AAA top seed Wheeling Park Friday at 5:30.

But, Scott weathered the storm and was able to grow its lead once again. The game was close for much of the third quarter, but the Skyhawks blew it open in the fourth quarter with 21 points in the final period.

Four Skyhawks scored in double figures led by Matt Dolan who scored 16 points and pulled down nine rebounds. David Ward did record a double-double with 11 points and 15 rebounds. Scott Drops Dots

GameNotes:

Scott advances to the state championship game with a 73-64 win over Poca Friday afternoon.

The Skyhawks were led by Justin Harmon and David Ward who combined to score 56 points. Harmon led the way with 29 points on 10-of-18 shooting with 12 rebounds, while Ward scored 27 points on 9-of-18 shooting and pulled down 15 rebounds.

Theyre good, said Scott head coach Jason Kingery. They are, theyre good players. I wish I could take some credit for it, but I credit my assistant coaches. Theyve worked them and developed them and two outstanding young men too.

The Skyhawks led from start to finish, never relinquishing the lead, but Scott coach Jason Kingery knew the Dots wouldnt give up.

Come on, its Alan Osbourne, one of the winningest high school coaches in the state of West Virginia, said Kingery. He does a great job and they have great athletes and all of our games have been down to the wire.

This one did not come down to the wire as the Skyhawks out rebounded the Dots 52-to-36.

They also held one of the best players in the state in check. Jason Cuffee was held to 15 points and 11 rebounds.

We did a lot of triangle and two, said Kingery. Theyve got sets against a box and one and they were kind of confused by the triangle and two because it does change the dynamics of the game out there. No ones run a triangle and two against them and a lot of people have run a box and one against them. It got them out of rhythm.

Clinton Parsons led the Dots with 18 points.

Both teams shot 36 percent from the field and both made six 3-pointers.

Scott will play the winner of the Oak Hill-Keyser game in the state championship game on Saturday at 2:30.

Trinity Advances To School's First Title Game

GameNotes:
Trinity Christian School advances to the state championship game for the first time in school history with a 55-29 win over Tucker County Friday afternoon.
The Warriors used a huge third quarter to turn a tie ball game into a blowout. Trinity made five 3-pointers and ended the quarter on a 24-1 run. It changed a 16-16 halftime tie into a 42-21 game at the start of the final period.
They seemed to stand a little stiff in the first half and not moving, so I gave them a little motivation at halftime, said Trinity Coach Herman Pierson of his teams unusually low offensive output in the first half. While they only scored 16 in the first half the Warriors scored 39 in the second. Its amazing what a little movement on offense will get you as far as getting open and getting you in the groove shooting the ball.
Eleven different Trinity players scored in the game led by Chris Martinez who recorded a double-double with 14 points and 15 rebounds. A.J. Mayle added 12 points. The Warriors made five-of-eight 3-pointers and shot 50 percent from the field for the second game in a row.
Weve been able to get to some places that have some backgrounds like [the Civic Center] that are open, and thats helped us, said Pierson of his teams hot shooting. At our home gym this past week I made them practice on the side baskets where theres more room in behind so they could get used to that openness and all my guys are good shooters, they work hard at it.
The Warriors buckled down on defense in the second half as well, holding the Mountain Lions to just 13 total points after halftime.
Holding them to under ten points per quarter was our goal and we did that all but one quarter, said Pierson.
Logan and Tyler Snyder led Tucker County with ten points apiece.
Trinity will play Weirton-Madonna in the state championship game at noon on Saturday. The two teams met twice in the regular season with Trinity winning the first matchup, 80-57, but Madonna won the second meeting, 86-81, in a controversial overtime game. In that game Madonna was able to tie the game at the end of regulation because the clock did not start until after the Blue Dons had crossed half court.
Its the first time a Class A team from Monongalia County has advanced to the state title game since 1980 when St. Francis Catholic School played Madonna at the WVU Coliseum. St. Francis won that game 78-69
